RENTAL F.A.Q
How many boards can I rent?
We will only have 2 boards available to rent for now. If things go well we might allow more to go out at once later in the year.
Do I need any instruction to rent?
Taking lessons or getting instruction beforehand always makes new adventures more enjoyable. At this time, its not requiring to rent.
Can I have the board fully inflated when I pick it up?
Unfortunately no. Since we don't have regular business hours, to make rentals possible we have to use our pickup box which is only big enough to hold 2 boards packed in their carry bag.
How much space does the SUP case take in my car?
SUP bags are fairly large. 42 x 20 x 12 inches. If you're renting to take on a trip, plan ahead so you have room for a very large suitcase in additional to whatever you're already packing.
How do I take care of our rentals while we have them?
All that information will be provided when you book your rental.
Where can I take the rentals to Paddle?
Kinda anywhere there is deep enough water for your to float through! If you're paddling locally, we recommend going to one of the calm, flatwater locations we've scouted and proven to be a good place to SUP found on the map. Its a good mix of deep water river sections and lakes.
How deep does the river (or lake bottom) need to be for me to paddle?
You should be picking sections of river that are 4-5ft of water or more. Given you'll always have to navigate a little bit of shallow areas when paddling basically anywhere, you need about 12 inches before you risk catching your fin and getting thrown off your board. When it doubt, kneel it out.
Why don't you include a leash with rentals?
We expect most people to use our rentals on nearby rivers. A leash can create a entanglement hazard on rocks, downed trees, and other debris commonly found in rivers that without training and property safety equipment could be life threatening. Because of this, we don't include them standard.
Can I take our rental boards in the ocean at the beach?
Yes, but you'll need a leash by law and it will be a bumpy ride. Let us know during booking your going to the beach so we can include a leash with your rental package. Please respect the surf impact zone and be aware of people around you when paddling in or out through the surf break. Unless you have surf experience, we recommend only launching at areas that waves smaller than thigh high.
Can I request a leash with our rental?
If you're planning to take your rental to the ocean, beach, wide-body tidal rivers close to the coast, the Chesapeake Bay, the sound in the Outer Banks, or even plan to only paddle at a lake - you can request a leash with your rental as they are places that either require them by law, or are waterways that have added risk due to currents, wind, and waves, where a leash are necessary safety tool.
What happens if I accidentally damage the board?
In the unfortunate case that you damage the board, we'll assess the repair and charge you that amount. If its a total loss, unfortunately we'll have to change your credit card for the full price of a replacement. We will do our best to set you up for success though as our goal is for you to have fun, not worrying about stuff falling apart.
Can I do a down river float on the South, Middle, North River?
Honestly, 95% of the time, NO. These rivers are rain dependent when it comes to having paddle friendly water levels, and SUPs need deeper water than kayaks canoes to not get hung up. In the summer they are just too shallow for a paddle board. If you're going to a river, we recommend sticking to the handful of locations on these rivers we've already scouted and know are enjoyable for a day on the water.
Can I take our rentals down a whitewater run or through real rapids?
Our rental boards aren't allowed to be used on whitewater runs. Our boards should be only used on sections or river that have class 1 or 2 rapids along the trip, and rivers that have deep enough water to be floated safety. We have friends who paddle or work on basically ever popular whitewater section in or around Virginia all summer long who I've asked to be on the lookout for our boards where they shouldn't be. You'll likely get caught (with photo proof) and be banned from renting from us FOREVER! FORever! forever! ever, ever (echo, echo, echo).... Seriously though, its a safety thing for us. This includes Balcony Falls, the Lower James, among a few others nearby.
We want you to have a great time, not get banged up plus possibly deal with damaged costs that will just make your day even worse.
If you're interested in paddling whitewater on a SUP, our friends at Waterfront RVA in downtown Richmond offer lessons on the lower James when levels allow. They have all the safety gear, boards, and staff to help newcomers experience whitewater safely when standing up.
Ok, that's enough FAQs, let's go paddling!
